The concentration of economic activity in the metros raises questions about industrial development in the other non-metro areas, and also has implications for affordable transport as people are increasingly compelled to commute to work. The spatial variations in economic activity help perpetuate and reinforce poverty and inequality across Gauteng, with investment continuing to bypass the outlying areas in favour of the metros.
